About Shannon Hren, CNM

Shannon grew up in small towns and on a farm in Iowa and moved to Flagstaff to finish her undergraduate work at NAU. She earned undergraduate degrees at NAU and Western Governors University before pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing from Frontier Nursing University. She is board certified as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She spent 20 years of her career working as a labor and delivery nurse at Flagstaff Medical Center. As a midwife and nurse practitioner, she has experience working and training in varied settings, including a free-standing birth center in Denver, CO, and an all-midwife practice in Durango, CO, experiences that heavily influenced the model of care she strives to provide in her own community. As a provider, her clinical interests include birthing, sexual health, and menopause medicine.

“I have wanted to work in a midwife practice in Flagstaff for many years. After two decades at the bedside and years of building experience across very different care settings – from birth centers to federally qualified health centers to the Navajo reservation – I’ve made my way back to the place that first shaped me as a clinician. I am so excited to join the amazing team at Flagstaff OBGYN. I love this community; Flagstaff has a way of staying with you, and the people here deserve care that truly sees them. I love educating clients and birthing families about options and empowering them to make decisions they believe are right for them. I am passionate about shared decision-making and believe that an integral part of all medical decisions includes taking into account the client’s values and preferences.”

When not working, Shannon enjoys spending time with friends, traveling in Mexico, looking for all of the best tacos and beaches, exploring, paddleboarding, camping, hiking, hot springs, and hot yoga. But most of all, she loves spending time with her family and her granddaughters, Emerald and Saylor.
