Obstetrics vs Gynecology: What is the Difference?

Normally, an ObGyn practice consists of two fields: obstetrics and gynecology. Both fields focus on your reproductive health and well-being. Obstetrics specializes in pregnancy, while gynecology is the treatment of your reproductive health.

Many providers specialize in both gynecology and obstetrics. At Genesis OBGYN, we have highly trained women’s healthcare providers who are dedicated to supporting your reproductive health.

Our services include…

Genesis OBGYN provides excellent healthcare for your reproductive needs.

Pregnancy Care & Delivery

Pregnancy care involves pre-conception counseling, reviewing your family medical history, and making sure you are current on all of your immunizations.

Contraception

If you do not want to have children, a healthcare provider can help you decide which birth control methods would be best for you.

Ultrasound & Imaging

Ultrasound and imaging can be used during pregnancy to determine your baby’s health and to help determine whether or not you are pregnant.

What is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics refers to the care and welfare of a pregnant woman and her baby. This includes care during pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Obstetricians are trained to address any complications or concerns during the pregnancy, such as high-risk circumstances, ectopic pregnancies, and health issues regarding the placenta or high blood pressure.

During your pregnancy, your obstetrician will help you through every stage to ensure the safety of you and your baby. Your obstetrician can also determine the best method for delivery. Immediately following the delivery, your obstetrician will ensure that you and your baby are healthy.

Your Genesis OBGYN provider can answer any questions you have about your pregnancy.

What is Gynecology?

While obstetrics is specifically for pregnancy, gynecology consists of all other areas of women’s reproductive health. Your gynecologist provides preventive reproductive healthcare to support you throughout your life.

During your annual exam, your gynecologist will screen you for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers. You can discuss any menstrual health issues, contraceptive care, and sexual health issues with your gynecologist.

We recommend meeting annually with your gynecologist to take care of your reproductive health.
