Like other conditions of the body, pregnancy has early signs and symptoms that can indicate something is going on. If you think you may be pregnant, it can help to know what symptoms to look out for.
Genesis OBGYN providers are passionate about providing patient-first and compassionate care for you during your pregnancy. We encourage you to schedule an appointment at one of our Tucson, Phoenix, or Sierra Vista, Arizona, offices if you believe you may be pregnant.
Common Early Signs of Pregnancy
There are quite a few signs that you may be pregnant. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Tender breasts
- Fatigue
- A missed period
- Nausea
- More frequent urination
When you’re pregnant, your body’s hormone and blood levels increase, and you may find yourself needing to urinate more often, have tender breasts, and feel more fatigued. Changing hormone levels also stops your period once you’re pregnant because you will not ovulate for the duration of your pregnancy.
Nausea, commonly referred to as morning sickness, can happen as early as two weeks into your pregnancy. It can happen anytime and is not limited to just the morning hours.
These symptoms can also indicate other health conditions. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, we advise you to schedule an appointment with your provider and take a more accurate pregnancy test. We also offer ultrasound imaging when it comes time to see your baby for the first time.
Less Common Signs of Pregnancy
Pregnancy can feel different to everyone. Some of the less common/uncommon signs of pregnancy include:
- Spotting
- Food Cravings
- Headaches
- Skin Changes
- Congestion
- Metallic taste in your mouth
Hormone changes when you’re pregnant can lead to congestion, skin changes (including acne), headaches, and even spotting.
During pregnancy, you may crave certain foods or feel hungry more often. Food aversions can also occur, where you dislike a food you used to enjoy.
Occasionally, throughout the day, you may also experience a metallic taste in your mouth. This may happen when you eat certain foods, and it may also appear randomly. A metallic taste can indicate that you may be in the early stages of pregnancy.
If you have questions about any of the symptoms you’re experiencing, our providers are here to help.
When Can I Take a Pregnancy Test?
Pregnancy tests look for human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), which rises during pregnancy. For a test to be positive, you must have a certain level of this hormone in your system. It is ideal to wait a week or so after you’ve missed your period before testing. This helps achieve accurate results. False positives and negatives are possible.
Your healthcare provider can confirm your pregnancy by using a test they conduct in their office. They may ask you for a urine sample or a blood sample to complete the pregnancy test. Once you and your provider have the results, you can discuss the next steps.
