What is a Midwife?
A midwife is licensed and skilled in caring for women, whether that is during pregnancy or through all the stages of your life. If you are pregnant, midwives provide ongoing medical care, including the diagnosis of high-risk pregnancies, and can help you create a birth plan and give birth.
Midwives are certified to perform the work they do. Genesis OBGYN employs several Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs). CNMs are registered nurses who have completed midwifery education at an accredited graduate-level program. CNMs have also earned a national certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board. They are authorized to practice and prescribe in all US states and territories. Many CNMs have also earned a practice registered nurse license available in many states.
Can A Midwife and Obstetrician Work Together?
Midwives and obstetricians often work together to help a woman through her pregnancy and postpartum journey to ensure that a woman’s desire, autonomy, and background are respected. Both providers can be involved in the family planning process before pregnancy. Your healthcare team is there to help you and give you the personalized care you need.
With lower-risk pregnancies, midwives often take the lead when it comes to your healthcare. They will guide, and your other provider will listen. With moderately-risky pregnancies, your midwife and obstetrician may work hand-in-hand. If you have a higher-risk pregnancy, your obstetrician will take the lead, maybe with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, while your midwife provides support.
Your providers understand how essential teamwork is to patient care and safety. We will take into account your pregnancy goals and plans when creating a healthcare plan for your pregnancy.
