What to Expect from a Diagnostic Mammogram and Mammogram Screening
When Should I Schedule a Mammogram Screening?
As you begin to schedule a mammogram, it’s important to first note the difference between a mammogram screening and a diagnostic mammogram. Annual mammogram screenings are recommended for women at age 40 and above, whether you are experiencing any questionable symptoms or not.
At the time of the procedure:
- You will stand in front of a special X-ray machine, usually in a front-opening gown.
- The mammography technologist will place one breast on a plate.
- Another plate, located above, will firmly press down on your breast.
- The plates are designed to flatten your breast and to hold it still, so an X-ray can be taken.
- You will feel pressure for a brief moment.
- These steps are then repeated for a side view of the breast.
This annual screening enables your healthcare provider to see any abnormal areas in your breast, as the physician looks for calcifications and masses. If those are present, it doesn’t always mean that cancer is present, but it is a start in understanding how to diagnose any issues you may be having.
When Should I Schedule a Diagnostic Mammogram?
If your screening results are suspicious or raise any concerns, you may be referred to a diagnostic mammogram. You may also be referred to a diagnostic mammogram if you are experiencing symptoms of breast cancer.
These symptoms can include:
- A noticeable lump
- Breast pain
- Change in breast shape
- Any discharge
A diagnostic mammogram will provide a more detailed X-ray, so we can address any concerns and determine the next steps. Both screening and diagnostic mammograms can help you take control of your health.
The Diagnostic Mammogram Procedure
As mentioned, a diagnostic mammogram is designed to provide a more detailed image of the breast tissue and determine any cancerous areas. This procedure is essential to obtain an unobstructed view of your breasts.
On the day of your procedure, you should expect your doctor to spend time capturing every angle and area in order to provide an accurate result. You can expect to wear a gown during your procedure, so it may be helpful to wear loose clothing to change in and out of.
Similar to a screening, your breasts will be placed on a platform to obtain diagnostic images. You may experience slight pressure or discomfort during this, but you can rest assured that our experienced doctors will work quickly and efficiently to capture what they need.
What Can I Expect from the Results?
Following your diagnostic mammogram, you and your doctor will be able to view the results when they are available. Our doctors can discuss the results in a clear and detailed manner. Based on the results of the mammogram, your doctor will then recommend next steps and options for you.
